A. Research- Book [Working Title]: Contemporary Dance[Modern/Western Movement Vocabulary]: The catalyst for deviation and extension in Post Structural Sound, Choreoperiodicity, Optimum Creative Dialog and the Dunnist Period in Music. This research is rooted in Musician Louis Horst's seminal work in the early part of the last century during the birth of modern dance, followed by the work of Henry Cowell, Pia Gilbert, Lou Harrison, John Cage and others, and subsequently the work by Robert Ellis Dunn at and during the Judson Church years leading to the emergence of post modern dance and new directions, explorartions and practice by "Dance Musicians" in the latter part of last century, the formation of the International Guild of Musicians in Dance(IGMID) and the current practice in Music as an interdisclipinary artform within the context of modern/post modern & contemporary dance.
* Begun in 2004, at the Barker Center for Dance, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, with a series of experimental sessions redefining the soundscape within the context of a four-dimensional moved-space.
B. OPEN SOURCE DANCE: A comprehensive methodology for an alternate professional contemporary dance environment.
*An outcome from research listed in item A. Currently in the third year of the pilot program
C. "STEEL": This will be an evening length work utilizing the structure of the Weisman Art Museum. As I am only inspired by the human form, I will utilize real time images of choreography projected onto the outer west wall of the Weisman Art Museum to create the illusion of structural life. The resulting visual translation created by the melding of the human form and the lines of the Frank Gehry designed structure will provide the source material for the sound score, the resulting soundscore will provide the source material for the Choreography.
* I would observe the Weisman Art Museum across the mississippi river during my regular trips back and forth from the University of Minnesota. The desire to see the only "innanimate" object, which inspires me, come to life, provided the ideal situation to put into practice "Optimum Creative Dialog" principals, a relationship based on movement vocabulary analysis during live performance between/by musician and dancer. An outcome from the research in item A.
D. "CEYLON": This is a reconstruction of Composer Karlheinz Stockhausen's work "Ceylon" which was composed after his visit to Sri Lanka in 1970. Artistic Director Kapila Palihawadana, of nATANDA Dance Theatre of Sri Lanka, considerd the pioneer of modern dance in Sri Lanka, will set Choreography on "Ceylon".
* I was born and raised in Sri lanka. My decades long desire to reconstruct "Ceylon" for the sole purpose of setting it on modern dance from Sri Lanka came to fruition with the emergence of nATANDA in Sri Lanka in the past few years and my subsequent meeting and rehearsal with kapila palihawadana at the Dance theatre workshop in New York in 2009.
